Bute is a beautiful accessible island, which is 15 miles long and 4 miles wide. It is situated in the Clyde estuary on the west coast of Scotland and about 35 miles from Glasgow. It has a good road network and is serviced by frequent car ferry service from the mainland at Wemyss Bay. The ferry journey is 35 minutes and there are sailings throughout the year. There is also a year round ferry service from the north end of the island to the mainland. There is a rail connection to the ferry terminal at Wemyss Bay. Both Glasgow and Prestwick airports are within easy reach.

By road

If Travelling from the South take the M6 Motorway north which becomes the M74 and follow to the outskirts of Glasgow. Then join the M8 motorway, following the signs for Glasgow airport and Greenock, and then follow the signs for Largs and Wemyss Bay. On arrival at Wemyss Bay the ferry terminal is beside the railway station. This is where you catch the ferry to Bute with a crossing time of 35 minutes.

On arrival in Rothesay, leave the ferry and continue to the main road junction. Go straight across and follow the road up hill with Rothesay Castle on your right to a give way sign. Continue on High Street past the police station on your right side. Turn right into Russell Street and continue on the B878 out of Rothesay for a distance of approximately 2 miles until you come to a give way sign at a junction. Continue straight ahead sign posted Straad on the A844. After a ¼ mile the road veers to the right and just on the bend you will notice a dry stone wall with gate pillars on the left hand side. Turn in to the driveway and continue to the house.

If coming from the north west of Scotland, we suggest you make the short ferry crossing from Colintraive on the Cowal peninsula. This crossing takes approximately 5 minutes. On arrival continue in the direction of Port Bannatyne. Prior to entering the village, turn right on to the A844 sign posted for Ettrick Bay. Follow this road for about 1 mile and then turn left signed posted Ballianlay and Straad A844. Follow this road for a distance of about 2 miles until you reach a T junction. Turn left and continue for ¼ mile till you see a dry stone wall and gate pillars on you right. Turn right in to driveway and continue to house.

By Air

The nearest airport is Glasgow which is about 20 miles from the Wemyss Bay ferry terminal. Paisley railway station is approximately 10 minutes from Glasgow airport with rail services to Wymess Bay.

Prestwick airport is a little further away to the south. If flying into this airport, we would suggest taking the train from the airport into Glasgow Central Station, changing trains and continuing to Wemyss Bay for the ferry connection to Rothesay.

By Rail

The nearest train station is at Wemyss Bay at the ferry terminal for Rothesay. There is a regular train service from Glasgow Central to Wemyss Bay which links up with the train station at Paisley for the Airport and most of the ferry sailings. For rail travel information, visit the website of National Rail enquiries.

By Ferry

Ferries to the Isle of Bute are operated by Caledonian MacBrayne (Calmac). Their timetables are published on their web-site. Ferries from Wemyss Bay operate on a ¾ hourly service during the day. The ferry service running from Colintraive and Rhubodach runs approximately every 20 minutes during the day.

Buses and Taxis

There are taxis and buses on the island, but we do recommend that you bring you own car to be able to tour the surrounding area.
