Out & About the Isle of Bute
The location of the cottage is ideal for people who wish a quiet holiday in beautiful surroundings. Painting, walking, bird watching, pony trekking, cycling, sailing and golf are popular pastimes on the island. There are 3 pay n’ play courses and marked walks for the energetic as well as some wonderful empty beaches and numerous historical sites.
Architecture
There are many things to see and do on the island. A visit to Mount Stuart, Britain’s most spectacular Victorian Gothic House owned by the Marquess of Bute, is a ‘must see’ attraction. The Victorian fernery at Ascog which was restored in 1997 is also worth a visit. At the south end of the island lies St. Blane’s Chapel which was built in the 12th century.
Eating Out
The island has a fair selection of cafés, dining pubs and hotel restaurants where you can get anything from a quick snack to a special dinner. We keep a list of all tried and tested places and can make reservations for you. By prior arrangement, we can serve dinner in the cottage should you prefer a relaxing evening at home.
Day trips
Bute is perfectly located to make day trips to Argyll via the little ferry from the north end of the island. A visit to the gardens at Benmore, part of the Royal Botanics or to the gardens at Crarae are within easy reach.
The Loch Fyne Oyster bar is a perfect place for lunch and then onto Inverarary to visit the restored Inveraray Jail and Inveraray Castle, home to the Duke of Argyll. Another day out could take one to Tarbert on Loch Fyne, returning via ferry to Portavadie and then back to Bute. Tighnabruaich is just a short drive away with spectacular views of the famous "Kyles of Bute." Lunch could be taken at the Royal Hotel or at Inver Cottage on Loch Fyne. There is such wonderful scenery and so many places of interest to visit within a day's drive. If one wants to take a sail during the long summer days, the Waverley Paddle Steamer sails from Rothesay to various destinations around the Clyde coast including the Isle of Arran.
A day trip to Glasgow is possible without the need to drive. You can buy a day round trip ticket to Glasgow at the ferry terminal. The journey takes around 1 hour 45 minutes. It is even possible to continue to Edinburgh from there with a train journey of approximately 45 minutes.
